Why Sri Lanka Is a Runner’s Hidden Gem
When you think of Sri Lanka, running probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind.
You might picture golden beaches, colourful temples, incredible food, lush tea plantations, elephants, tropical forests and the famous train journey through the mountains. And you’d be right. Sri Lanka has all of that.
But there’s another way to experience the island that takes you far beyond the usual tourist route: running through it.
From jungle trails and mountain paths to tea plantations, remote villages and the spectacular Knuckles Mountain Range, Sri Lanka has everything you could want from an adventure running holiday. It’s a destination where every run feels like an exploration, and where the scenery, culture and food are just as much a part of the experience as the running itself.
For anyone looking for a Sri Lanka running holiday, a trail running adventure in Asia or something a little different from the usual running weekend, this could be the hidden gem you’ve been looking for.

Sri Lanka is made for adventure
One of the things that makes Sri Lanka so special is just how much variety you can find on one relatively small island.
You can run through tropical forests in the morning, climb into the cool Central Highlands in the afternoon and finish the day eating some of the best food you’ve ever had.
There are beaches, mountains, waterfalls, tea estates, rice fields, wildlife-rich forests and tiny villages. There’s ancient history, incredible architecture and a culture that feels completely different from anywhere in Europe.
And then there are the views.
Sri Lanka’s Central Highlands are particularly spectacular for trail running, with winding paths through tea country, ridgelines overlooking valleys and trails that disappear into the forest before opening up to another incredible viewpoint.
It’s exactly the kind of destination that makes a trail running holiday feel like much more than simply going for a run somewhere beautiful.
The Pekoe Trail: seeing Sri Lanka beyond the train window
There’s a good chance you’ve seen Sri Lanka’s famous mountain railway before. The train winds its way through the Central Highlands, passing endless tea plantations, misty mountains and tiny stations. It’s one of the most iconic ways to see this part of the country.
But what if you could get off the train and run it instead?
That’s where the Pekoe Trail comes in.
Sri Lanka’s first long-distance walking trail, the Pekoe Trail stretches for more than 300km through the Central Highlands and is divided into 22 stages. It connects tea plantations, forests, villages, valleys and historic routes, giving visitors the chance to experience Sri Lanka’s famous tea country on foot.
The trail is relatively new as a visitor experience, but the paths themselves are anything but new.
The route was created by connecting existing footpaths, plantation tracks and historic routes that have been used by local communities and tea plantation workers for generations. The development of the trail took place through a three-year Tourism Resilience Project supported by the European Union and USAID.
So while the Pekoe Trail may be a new name on the adventure travel map, you’re running through landscapes with a much longer history.
And that’s what makes it so exciting.
Most people see the Pekoe Trail from a train. We run it.
There’s something pretty special about watching the Sri Lankan Highlands disappear past a train window.
But running through them is a completely different experience.
Instead of watching the tea plantations roll past, you’re moving through them. Instead of seeing a village from the train, you run straight through it. You can stop for a chat, say hello to local people, take in the views, grab some fresh fruit or simply pause and appreciate where you are.
The pace changes everything.
And you don’t have to be an ultra runner to experience it.
The Pekoe Trail is made up of different stages, with a mixture of terrain and difficulty. Some sections pass through tea estates and villages, while others climb through forests and mountain landscapes.
For runners, it creates an incredible playground for a trail running adventure.
Running through the Knuckles Mountain Range
While our route doesn’t actually run through the Knuckles Mountain Range, you can enjoy spectacular views of it from the trail.
As we run through Sri Lanka’s Central Highlands, the landscape constantly changes around us, with mountains stretching into the distance, rolling tea country and valleys opening up below.
It’s one of those places where the scenery makes you want to stop every few kilometres just to take another photo.
And this is what makes Sri Lanka such an exciting destination for trail running holidays. The trails aren’t just about the running. They take you through some of the island’s most beautiful landscapes, giving you a completely different perspective of the country.
And then there’s the food. . .
Let’s be honest: food is a pretty important part of any good running trip.
And Sri Lanka absolutely delivers.
Think colourful curries, rice, coconut, fresh fruit, spices, hoppers, roti and endless cups of Ceylon tea.
There’s something incredibly satisfying about finishing a morning of trail running and sitting down to a huge plate of local food.
It’s also one of the things we love about travelling for running. You’re not simply ticking off kilometres. You’re experiencing a place through all of your senses.
The food, the people, the smells, the sounds and the landscapes all become part of the running holiday.
A running holiday that feels like a real adventure
There are plenty of places where you can book a running holiday and spend a week following familiar roads or ticking off a training plan.
That’s not really what we’re looking for.
For us, the best running adventures are the ones where the running is the way you experience somewhere new.
Sri Lanka is perfect for that.
You can run along trails you might never have discovered as a traditional tourist. You can explore remote corners of the island, meet local communities, eat food you’ve never tried before and finish the day somewhere beautiful.
It’s a running trip, but it’s also a holiday, an adventure and a chance to see a country from a completely different perspective.
Why Sri Lanka belongs on your running bucket list
Sri Lanka somehow manages to pack an enormous amount into one island.
Mountain trails? Absolutely.
Jungle running? Yes.
Tea plantations? Everywhere.
Incredible views? Constantly.
Food? One of the best parts.
Culture and history? Everywhere you go.
Adventure? You won’t be short of it.
And perhaps most importantly, it still feels like a destination that many runners haven’t discovered yet.
The Pekoe Trail itself has already started attracting international attention, including recognition as a Best of the World destination for 2024. But there’s still something exciting about being able to explore these trails before they become a fixture on every traveler´s bucket list.
Come and run Sri Lanka with us
Our Sri Lanka running holiday is designed to experience the island the way we think it should be experienced: on foot.
Across five days of running, we’ll explore some of the most spectacular sections of the Pekoe Trail, running through tea plantations, forests, villages and the mountains of Sri Lanka’s Central Highlands.
It’s around 85km of trail running, but the kilometres are only part of the experience.
We’ll experience the local culture, discover the landscapes that make Sri Lanka so special, eat incredible food and see parts of the country that you simply wouldn’t experience from the window of a train.
Because sometimes the best way to see somewhere isn’t from a train, a bus or a tour. It’s with your trainers on, a trail disappearing in front of you and no idea what incredible view is waiting around the next corner.
Sri Lanka isn’t just somewhere to visit. It’s somewhere to run.
And we think it might just be one of Asia’s best-kept running secrets.
