Itinerary
Join us for a trail running journey into the heart of Switzerland’s Alpstein Alps, a region of jagged ridgelines, rolling pastures, and striking alpine lakes. Based in the charming town of Appenzell, this experience blends valley trails with a high mountain hut stay, offering a true taste of running in the Alps. This is not about pace or performance, but about moving through the mountains together - taking time to climb steadily, pause often, and fully take in the surroundings.
Expect a mix of runnable forest trails, steep ascents, and more technical ridge sections, all rewarded with expansive views and memorable moments along the way. Highlights include the iconic Seealpsee and a spectacular ridge run to Schäfler Hut, perched high above the valley. With a combination of comfortable hotel stays and a night in a traditional mountain hut, plus the option to unwind at a local spa, this trip balances adventure with recovery. You’ll be supported throughout by an experienced team, allowing you to focus on the running, the landscape, and the shared experience. For convenience, the trip begins and ends in Appenzell, which is easily reached from Zurich by a simple and scenic train journey of around two hours.
Day 1
Arrival in Appenzell & Shakeout Run - 6km, 250m+
Your Run Weekend kicks off at 15:00 at the hotel in Appenzell (details confirmed on booking). After a welcome brief you will have time to settle into your hotel and explore the town’s colourful streets and relaxed pace of life. Later in the day, we head out for an easy shakeout run - a gentle loop through rolling countryside and quiet trails, perfect for loosening the legs after travel and getting a first feel for the terrain. In the evening, we come together for a relaxed group dinner and trip briefing, setting the tone for the days ahead.

Day 2
Lake Loop & Ridge Views - 16km, 1200m+
After breakfast, a short train ride takes us to Wasserauen, where today’s run begins. The trail climbs steadily through forest, mixing runnable sections with power hiking as we gain height toward Seealpsee, one of the most beautiful alpine lakes in Switzerland. As the valley opens up, the terrain becomes more flowing, with the dramatic peak of Säntis rising above the lake. There’s time here to pause, take photos, and even enjoy a refreshing swim for those brave enough. From the lake, we continue toward the iconic cliffside restaurant at Äscher, carved into the rock face - a perfect spot to stop for drinks and take in the view. The route then descends smoothly back toward the valley, offering a satisfying mix of effort and flow. A brilliant introduction to the Alpstein - varied trails, big scenery, and a relaxed, sociable pace throughout.

Day 3
Climb to Schäfler Hut - 20km, 2000m+
Leaving Appenzell, we roll gently through farmland before climbing steadily into the mountains beneath Ebenalp. The early kilometres allow us to find a rhythm before the route steepens into a more sustained ascent. We pause along the way at a traditional alpine guesthouse for a relaxed lunch before continuing upward. The trail becomes more rugged as we gain height, with switchbacks leading into rocky terrain and ever-expanding views. The final section brings us onto a dramatic ridgeline, where the trail narrows and the exposure increases, creating a memorable approach to Schäfler Hut.We arrive high above the valley, with the afternoon free to relax, take in the panoramic views, or head out for sunset before a memorable night in the mountains.

Day 4
Sunrise Ridge Run, Descent, Spa & Departure - 13km, 400m+
We start early, setting out at sunrise along the ridgeline, with soft morning light stretching across the Alpstein peaks. It’s a special time to be in the mountains - quiet, expansive, and unforgettable. From here, we begin our descent, following flowing trails down through alpine meadows and past scattered huts and chapels. As we drop into the valley, the terrain softens, eventually leading us back into Appenzell. We arrive back in town around lunchtime, where there’s time to relax, refuel, and enjoy a well-earned meal together. In the afternoon, we head to Hof Weissbad Spa for recovery - soaking tired legs and unwinding after the days in the mountains. We’ll wrap up the trip in the late afternoon, allowing for a smooth and relaxed departure back toward Zurich or onward travel.
