Itinerary

Welcome to the Canadian Rockies, a vast wilderness of jagged peaks, glacial valleys, pine forests and turquoise lakes. Join us for 5 nights of trail running that carries us point-to-point through the heart of the range, from the city of Calgary to the legendary mountain town of Banff. We'll run scenic valley trails skirting the edge of Barrier Lake, climb high into the mountains over Wind Mountain at more than 2,700m above sea level, and finish with a long, flat valley run between two mountain ranges along the banks of a stunning river. Along the way there's a mountain hike to a breathtaking summit viewpoint, a free afternoon to explore or simply rest, and the chance to pass through the mountain towns and villages that give this region its character. Your bags are transported between each stage by our support vehicle, so you just focus on the running. This is not a race, it's a shared mountain adventure. We move together as a group at a pace that works for everyone, with the team handling logistics, trail snacks, and dinners along the way. We'll stay in the local hostel network throughout - chosen for the community spirit and that true wilderness feel - and gather each evening for hearty group meals in the towns we pass through. Please note: this trip includes significant elevation and some big mountain days, so a good level of hiking and trail fitness will help you get the most out of it.

Day 1

Welcome to Calgary!

Arrive into Calgary, where we'll spend our first night. Take some time to explore the city before meeting the team at our hotel at 17:00. This is where you'll meet your fellow runners and the Run Weekends team, and we'll run through our welcome talk and everything the week has in store. From there it's a short walk round the corner to dinner at a local restaurant with plenty of choice to fuel up properly before the running begins in the morning.

Day 2

Calgary to Kananaskis Village, Barrier Lake Trails - 25km, 500m+

Our day begins at 08:00, with breakfast served in the hotel. The team will brief you on the day ahead and hand out all the trail snacks you could need. Transport will be waiting outside at 10:30, alongside our separate support vehicle that carries your bags between each stage. From there it's a quick, scenic transfer to Willow Rock Campground and the start of the running - 25km through to Kananaskis Village, skirting the edge of Barrier Lake. We'll be running forested lakeside trails through the Bow Valley, with the still turquoise water of Barrier Lake on one side and pine-covered slopes rising steeply on the other. Once we arrive at our hostel for the night, the team will prepare dinner for you on site, so you can relax and put your feet up. Tomorrow is a big one.

Day 3

Kananaskis Village to Canmore - 33km, 1500m+

Today we're heading into the mountains. We'll start with breakfast at the hostel and prep our lunches for the trail to make sure we're ready for the day ahead. There's only one refuel point, at 25km, so we'll make sure everyone carries enough water. Bags into the support vehicle, and we want to be on the trails by 09:00. Today's run is 33km with 1,500m of elevation, reaching over 2,700m above sea level on Wind Mountain. The route climbs steadily through subalpine pine forest and open alpine meadows before the rocky, exposed terrain near the high point, then a long descent through the trees into the Bow Valley. From there we drop down into the town of Canmore, where we'll be staying for the next two nights. There'll be time to shower and recover before a short walk to a local Indian restaurant, where we'll order a variety of dishes to share.

Day 4

Canmore & Mount Lady Macdonald Hike - 15km, 1300m+

A slightly gentler day today. We'll start at 08:00 with breakfast at a nearby coffee bar, then head up Mount Lady Macdonald - an out-and-back of around 15km that climbs to a high viewpoint with breathtaking views across the whole area. It's a steep climb on forest trails that gives way to an exposed ridgeline, with huge views down over Canmore, the Bow Valley and the Three Sisters from the top. Once we've safely descended back into town, we'll grab lunch together as a group before a free afternoon for you to explore Canmore at your own pace (or have a well deserved nap!). We'll regroup for dinner at a local restaurant at 19:00.

Day 5

Canmore to Banff - 35km, 500m+

Our final run day, so let's finish strong. We'll walk to a local bagel and coffee spot for breakfast, then load our bags into the support vehicle one last time and hit the trails. Today is long but, thankfully, flat - 35km from Canmore into Banff, running through a wide valley between two mountain ranges and along the banks of a stunning river. The trail follows the Bow River through pine forest along the valley floor, hemmed in by the Fairholme Range on one side and the dramatic face of Mount Rundle on the other as we cross into Banff National Park. There's no vehicle support available on the trail today, so be sure to pack enough food and water. We'll finish at our hostel in Banff with time for a shower and a change before a short walk to our final group dinner.

Day 6

Banff to Calgary & Goodbyes

Our transport back to Calgary will be ready at 09:00. We'll grab food and coffee on the road before dropping you back in Calgary to end our time together. The transfer takes around 90 minutes, so depending on your flight times you may have a little extra time to explore the city. The Run Weekend officially ends at 11:00 when we drop you off. We recommend booking onward travel no earlier than 15:00 to allow for eventual delays.
