Itinerary

Welcome to the Tour du Mont Blanc, the most iconic long-distance trail in the Alps - a complete loop around the highest mountain in western Europe, crossing three countries, ten mountain passes and some of the most spectacular alpine scenery in the world. Join us for 6 nights of trail running covering the full route end-to-end, sleeping in traditional mountain refuges along the way, starting and finishing in Les Houches at the foot of the Mont Blanc massif. We'll run six big days, covering roughly 165km, with around 10,000m of total climbing - from rolling alpine pasture and ancient drove roads on the French side, over the Col de la Seigne into Italy and the granite spires of the south face of Mont Blanc, then across the Grand Col Ferret into Switzerland's quieter pastoral valleys, before tackling the spectacular Fenêtre d'Arpette and returning to the French side for the final balcony traverse home. Stops in Courmayeur for proper Italian pizza and in chocolate-box Swiss villages along the way punctuate the bigger days, with plenty of opportunities for coffee, cold drinks and photos en route. This is not a race, it's trail running as a journey.

We'll run as a group at a relaxed, social pace, with the climbs tackled at whatever speed suits the day. Refuges are basic but characterful - communal dorms, simple hot meals, and unforgettable views from the doorstep. Evenings are spent sharing tables with hikers and runners from around the world, stargazing from high alpine balconies, and turning in early for the next day's climb. Please note: the TMB involves significant elevation, exposure and consecutive big days, so a solid base of trail and hiking fitness will help you get the most out of this Run Weekends.

Day 1

Welcome to Les Houches

Arrive into Les Houches during the afternoon, with check-in at our hotel from 15:00 onwards. Les Houches is a small mountain village at the foot of the Chamonix valley, sitting directly beneath Mont Blanc itself. Once everyone has gathered, we'll meet for a welcome briefing and walk the short distance into town for our first dinner together at a local restaurant. Your main bags can be left at the hotel for the week - we'll collect them again at the end of the loop. An early night before the first big day.

Day 2

Les Houches into the Bon Nant Valley - 25km, 1700m+

Today is the day! We will get up early and pick up some pastries and coffee from a local boulangerie to fuel us for the day ahead. The first day of the loop takes us up through pine forest to Col de Voza, where the Bionnassay Glacier comes into full view. From there we descend through traditional alpine hamlets toward Les Contamines-Montjoie, then follow a historic Roman path past the Notre-Dame de la Gorge chapel and climb steadily up the valley to tonight's refuge, a working mountain hut tucked high in the Bon Nant valley. Communal dorm, hearty mountain dinner, and an early lights-out.

Day 3

Over Col de la Seigne into Italy - 25km, 1850m+

Today is another big mountain day. We climb up to the Col du Bonhomme and on over the higher Col de la Croix du Bonhomme, then drop steeply into the Les Chapieux valley before the long climb up to Col de la Seigne - the Italian border at 2,516m. The descent into Italy is one of the great moments of the TMB: the Val Veny opens up beneath you with the south face of Mont Blanc looming to the left and a sea of granite peaks in every direction. The trail follows the valley to tonight's refuge, perched high above the Italian side of the massif. Picnic lunch is packed up from this morning's refuge and eaten somewhere along the way with a view. Pasta, polenta and a cold drink await this evening.

Day 4

Val Veny to the Head of Val Ferret - 33km, 1960m+

This is our biggest day of the trip! We follow the Val Veny down with Mont Blanc's southern face dominating the skyline, descending toward Courmayeur - our lunch stop for a proper Italian pizza and a cold drink. From Courmayeur a steep climb pulls us back up onto the famous Val Ferret balcony trail, contouring along the valley with constant views across to the Grandes Jorasses. Eventually we drop to the head of the valley and tonight's refuge, sitting beneath Mont Dolent - the mountain where France, Italy and Switzerland meet at a single point. Hot meal, cold beer, early bed.

Day 5

Grand Col Ferret into Switzerland - 27km, 1088m+

Today we reach country number three! From the head of Val Ferret the climb up to Grand Col Ferret (2,537m) is steady but rewarding - and at the top, Switzerland opens up beneath us. We will stop for a picnic lunch along the way, and cold drink or hot chocolate (depending on the weather!) in a refuge mid way. We descend through pastureland to the village of La Fouly, then follow a softer trail through Swiss villages - Praz de Fort, Issert - eventually arriving at the chocolate-box mountain village of Champex-Lac, set around a beautiful alpine lake. Tonight we stay lakeside, with a swim in the lake highly recommended before dinner.

Day 6

Champex-Lac to Tré-le-Champ via Fenêtre d'Arpette - 23km, 1710m+

If the weather allows us we will take on the spectacular high route - the Fenêtre d'Arpette. It's a long, steep climb up the Val d'Arpette to the col at 2,665m, with a final scramble through boulder fields, before a dramatic descent past the Trient Glacier on the far side. If there is too much snow cover we will simply take a lower route that is still as spectacular. From the village of Trient we head up and over the Col de Balme - back into France - with the iconic Mont Blanc massif spread out in front of us as we crest the col. The descent leads down through ski terrain to Tré-le-Champ, a small hamlet on the edge of the Chamonix valley. Enjoy your final refuge dinner and dorm - because tomorrow we close this epic loop.

Day 7

Tré-le-Champ to Les Houches - 23km, 1509m+

You have made it to the final day! From Tré-le-Champ we tackle the famous ladders up toward Tête aux Vents - fixed metal rungs that get us up the cliff bands (more dramatic looking than they are technical). Once up top, we traverse the balcony trail with the entire north face of Mont Blanc directly in front of us all morning. We continue along the high traverse toward Le Brévent, the classic Mont Blanc viewpoint, before the long descent down to Les Houches and the completion of the loop. The trip officially ends at 16:00 back in Les Houches. Your bags will be right where you left them on Day 1. We will enjoy a final celebratory drink all together and toast to a wonderful week.
