Itinerary

Welcome to the edge of the Arctic Circle - a place where jagged mountains rise straight from the sea, fishing villages cling to the shoreline, and the sun never truly sets. The Lofoten Islands are one of Norway’s most spectacular and untamed regions: dramatic, remote, and endlessly photogenic.

This five-day running adventure takes you deep into the heart of the islands, linking mountain trails, coastal paths, and traditional fishing villages beneath the glow of the midnight sun. Each day reveals a new landscape - from echoes of Viking history and sweeping ridgelines to quiet fjords and open ocean views.

You’ll stay in cosy red seaside cottages and a beautiful fjord-side lodge with a sauna and hot tub, sharing hearty meals and trail stories as the midnight sun circles the sky. With a small group of like-minded runners, this is a deeply rewarding journey through one of the wildest and most striking corners of the world. Expect long days on the trails, big moments of solitude and connection, and a pace that allows you to truly absorb this extraordinary landscape.

This is running as exploration - immersive, elemental, and unforgettable.

Day 1

Welcome to Run Weekends in Norway - 7km coastal shakeout

We ask you to arrive in Svolvær by 15:00 and check into our hotel, set among the colourful harbours and dramatic peaks of Lofoten’s gateway town. At 15:30, we’ll gather for a welcome briefing where your guides will talk you through the days ahead and help you get ready for the adventure. Then it’s time to lace up for a gentle 7 km shakeout run along the coastline - the perfect way to stretch your legs after travel and soak up your first views of the Norwegian fjords. Back at the hotel, we’ll freshen up before heading into town for dinner at a local restaurant, sharing a relaxed evening and preparing for the mountain trails ahead.

Day 2

Viking Trails to the Fjord Cottages - 20km, 1000m+

After an early breakfast, we’ll travel west by local bus to the start of our first big run - the historic Lofotr Viking Museum, where we’ll begin tracing the ancient landscapes once roamed by Norse explorers. The first few kilometres follow quiet coastal roads before we climb into the hills and join the trails. As the day unfolds, we’ll wind our way through open meadows, along rocky ridgelines, and past mirror-like lakes reflecting the surrounding peaks. The route totals around 20 km, with steady climbs and endless views across the Norweigan sea below. We finish back at sea level, where our traditional red fishermen’s cottages await - right on the water’s edge. In true Norwegian style, we’ll cook a hearty meal together, share stories from the trail, and watch the late-evening sunlight shimmer across the fjord. Don’t forget your eye mask, this is the land of the midnight sun!

Day 3

The Long Traverse: Mountains, Bridges & Fjords - 30km, 1000m+

Today is the heart of the adventure - a full day of running through some of the most spectacular scenery in northern Europe. After a big breakfast in the cottages, we set out for our longest stage: 30 km with 850 m of elevation gain. We climb steadily from the shoreline up into the high mountains, reaching a 500 m ridgeline that rewards every step with incredible 360° views of the Lofoten archipelago. Jagged peaks rise from the sea, and ribbons of trail lead us down toward the coast once again. From here, the route traces the fjord edge, hugging the shoreline as we cross a series of sweeping bridges linking the islands together. On the final stretch, we can see our destination across the water - a beautiful fjord-side lodge complete with an outdoor hot tub and sauna. We’ll celebrate the day’s effort with a soak, a drink, and dinner overlooking the water - pure Arctic bliss.

Day 4

Summits & the Sea: Return to Svolvær - 20km, 1200m+

A slightly slower start this morning, with breakfast overlooking the fjord before we tackle our final full day on the trails. Today’s route covers around 20 km with roughly 1200 m of climbing, combining mountain views with a memorable finale back in Svolvær. We begin on quiet roads before turning uphill, ascending to panoramic viewpoints that stretch across the islands and back toward the routes we’ve run. After descending to sea level, there’s one last challenge: a short but steep climb to Tjeldbergtinden, where we’re rewarded with breathtaking views over Svolvær, the Norwegian Sea, and the mountains beyond. From here, it’s a joyful descent back into town to complete our journey. The perfect recovery awaits - a visit to the harbour sauna and an optional plunge into the cold, clear sea (if you’re feeling brave!). In the evening, we’ll celebrate our adventure with a final dinner together in Svolvær, sharing stories of an unforgettable few days.

Day 5

Farewell to Lofoten - Optional 5km

Our final morning is a relaxed one. There’s time for coffee by the harbour and an optional short run for those who want one last taste of the trails. After breakfast, we’ll say our goodbyes and officially end the trip at 10:00, heading home with tired legs, big smiles, and memories of a truly spectacular corner of the world.
