Trail Running in the Canadian Rockies: The Ultimate Adventure Holiday
Updated: 2 days ago
If you’re looking for a running holiday that combines incredible mountain scenery, long trail runs, wild landscapes and a proper sense of adventure, trail running in the Canadian Rockies is hard to beat.
The Canadian Rockies are the kind of place that makes you stop mid-run just to take in the view. Think turquoise mountain lakes, huge peaks, dense forests, winding rivers and trails that disappear into the wilderness.
For runners who love exploring somewhere new, a Canadian Rockies running holiday is about much more than ticking off kilometres. It’s a chance to experience some of Canada’s most spectacular landscapes on foot, while spending your days running, exploring and discovering places like Kananaskis, Canmore and Banff.
And that’s exactly what we wanted to create with our Run Weekends Canadian Rockies running holiday.

Why the Canadian Rockies are made for trail running
There are plenty of places in the world where you can go for a beautiful run. The Canadian Rockies take things to another level.
The combination of mountains, forests, rivers, lakes and huge open landscapes means that every day on the trails feels different. One minute you’re running through pine forest, the next you’re looking out across a turquoise lake or climbing towards a mountain ridge.
It’s also an amazing destination for runners who want a trail running adventure rather than a traditional running holiday.
You’re not simply following a marked route around a city. You’re heading into the mountains, tackling long trails and spending your days surrounded by some of Canada’s most spectacular scenery.
For anyone searching for trail running holidays, running adventures or a running holiday that feels like a real trip, the Canadian Rockies tick a lot of boxes.
Running through the heart of the Rocky Mountains
Our Canadian Rockies running holiday takes you from Calgary towards Banff, travelling through some of the most spectacular landscapes in Alberta along the way.
Over six days, we run approximately 108km across four main running days, with around 3,800m of elevation. Around 90% of the route is on trails and mountain paths.
The route takes us through Kananaskis, Canmore and Banff, with plenty of time to experience the landscapes rather than simply passing through them.
This is a proper mountain running adventure, so it’s not designed as a beginner running holiday. You’ll need to be comfortable spending several hours on your feet and tackling long days with significant elevation. But you don’t need to be an elite runner or be interested in racing.
The focus is on exploring together, enjoying the trails and experiencing the mountains.
Barrier Lake and the turquoise waters of Kananaskis
One of the first big highlights is Barrier Lake in Kananaskis Country.
The scenery here is exactly what you imagine when you picture the Canadian Rockies. Clear blue-green water, forest-covered slopes and enormous mountains rising around you.
Running through this landscape is very different from road running or even many European trail routes. There’s a real feeling of space, and the mountains constantly remind you just how wild this part of Canada is.
Kananaskis is also one of the reasons we love trail running in Canada. It gives you that feeling of being properly out in nature, while still being accessible enough to explore on a guided running trip.
A big mountain day: Wind Mountain
Then comes one of the bigger days of the trip: Wind Mountain.
With the route reaching more than 2,700m, this is a day that feels like a genuine mountain adventure.
There’s plenty of climbing, but the reward is the scenery. The higher you go, the bigger the views become, with the Rocky Mountains stretching out around you.
This is one of those runs where the distance almost becomes secondary. You’re concentrating on the trail in front of you, stopping for photos, taking in the views and enjoying the experience of being somewhere completely different.
And, as with all our trips, there’s no racing. We run together, take the climbs at a sensible pace and make sure nobody is left behind.
Canmore, mountains and Mount Lady Macdonald
Canmore is another highlight of the trip.
Surrounded by mountains and located close to Banff National Park, it’s a fantastic base for exploring the Rockies on foot.
Our route takes us through this spectacular landscape with views towards Mount Lady Macdonald and the surrounding peaks.
There’s something particularly special about running in a place where the scenery feels almost too big to take in. You can spend hours on the trails and still feel like you’ve only seen a tiny part of the landscape.
For runners who normally spend their time on city streets, local paths or smaller hills, this is a completely different experience.
Finishing in Banff
Eventually, the trails lead us towards Banff, one of Canada's most famous mountain towns.
After several days of running through forests, mountains and wilderness, arriving in Banff feels like the perfect way to finish the adventure.
Banff is surrounded by some of the most famous scenery in the Canadian Rockies, so there’s plenty to explore once the running is finished.
It’s also a great place to slow down, enjoy some good food and properly take in everything you’ve experienced during the trip.
Banff: the perfect end to a running adventure
One of the things we love about a running holiday in Canada is that the running is only part of the experience.
You get to spend your days on spectacular trails, but you also get to experience the places you’re travelling through.
That might mean grabbing food in Canmore, relaxing after a long mountain day, exploring Banff or simply sitting somewhere with a drink and looking up at the mountains.
It’s the combination of running and travel that makes this feel like a proper adventure holiday rather than simply a week of training.
Why Canada makes such a special running holiday
Canada has an incredible amount to offer trail runners, but the Canadian Rockies are particularly special.
You have huge mountains, pristine lakes, forests, wildlife, rivers and some of the most spectacular scenery in North America all concentrated in one region.
And because the landscape is so varied, the running never feels repetitive.
You might be climbing a mountain one day, following a forest trail the next and running beside a river after that.
For anyone looking for running holidays abroad, adventure running holidays or a trail running holiday with a difference, Canada is a destination worth putting on your list.
More than just a trail running holiday
Our Run Weekends trips are designed to combine running with travel, and Canada is a perfect example of that.
We take care of the logistics so you can concentrate on enjoying the adventure.
Accommodation is organised, larger bags are transported between stages, and breakfasts, lunches, dinners and trail snacks are included.
You just need to turn up ready to run.
There’s also something special about experiencing a destination as part of a small group. You spend your days running together, sharing the big climbs, stopping for photos and celebrating the finish of each day's route together.
A running holiday for people who want a proper adventure
This isn't a running holiday for someone looking to chase a PB or train for a race.
It’s for people who want to see somewhere incredible on foot.
You’ll cover serious distances and take on plenty of elevation, but there’s no pressure to race. The aim is to enjoy the trails, take in the scenery and experience the Canadian Rockies together.
That’s what makes our Canadian Rockies trail running holiday different.
It’s challenging, but it’s also about the whole experience: the mountains, the trails, the food, the people and everything you discover along the way.
