Running tours are a great way to explore new destinations while indulging in your passion for running.
At least - we think so.
For beginners or first-timers, going on a running tour might seem daunting. But it's really not that scary, we promise! With the right preparation and mindset, it can be an incredibly rewarding experience.
Here's what you can expect from a Run Weekends running tour and how to prepare for your adventure.
What to Expect on a Run Weekends Running Tour

Whether you're running along coastal paths, through lush forests, or past historic landmarks, each route is carefully planned to provide a memorable and picturesque experience.
2. Expert Guidance and Support
Our running tours are led by experienced guides who are knowledgeable about the local area and passionate about running.
They provide not only route guidance but also insights into the history and culture of the destination. Additionally, support vehicles are available on longer routes to provide water, snacks, and assistance if needed.
Curated and led by Nick Butter, the first and only person to run a marathon in every single country in the world, the running tours are expertly designed. You can’t get a much better person to combine their love of travel and running.
Hear his stories from around the world!
3. Nick Butter

4. Flexible Pace and Distances
Run Weekends running tours cater to runners of all levels, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the experience at their own pace.
One of the most important goals of Run Weekends is to have fun during your running tour.
It’s not a race.
Routes are planned with flexibility in mind, offering various distance options to suit different fitness levels and goals. Whether you're a slow jogger or an enthusiastic sprinter, there's a place for you on our tours.
Most of our running tours also offer the chance to stop and rest any time you want to. There’s no pressure to carry on if you don’t want to!
5. Comfortable Mix of Accommodations
After a day of running, rest and recovery are crucial.
Our tours include comfortable accommodations that provide a relaxing environment to unwind. Expect cosy lodgings, delicious meals, and opportunities to socialise with fellow runners.
Each tour is different and has its own unique aspect. From mountain huts in Albania to 5* hotels in Dubai. And everything in between! Find a running tour that suits you.
6. Cultural and Social Experiences
Running tours are not just about running; they also offer a chance to immerse yourself in the local culture.
Of course, it’s a tour. It’s travel. And you’re not going to be running all day, every day! The trips are a mix of travel and running. And one of the most important aspects of travel is the cultural experiences you have!
We enjoy guided city tours and visits to local attractions, as well as dining at authentic restaurants and participating in cultural activities. In this way, we like to ensure you have a well-rounded travel experience.
7. A Great Travel Experience!

How to Prepare for Your First Running Tour
1. Training and Fitness
Don’t worry - for most of the Run Weekends running tours, basic fitness is enough.
We have a handy guide to help you see what level each running tour is at.
1 - All Abilities
2 - All abilities, but more challenging
3 - All abilities, but we suggest you have marathon experience
4- We suggest you have experience with ultra/multi-day events
Nevertheless, we stick by our main principles; it’s not a race. We’re here to have fun, and we go at the slowest person’s pace!
To fully enjoy your running tour, it is important to be adequately prepared physically.
If you want to be prepared, you can consider the following things;
- Training for a similar climate. Going to be going from very hot to very cold, or vice versa? Try to consider this in your training. If it’ll be much hotter where you’re going to run, try to run in the mid-day heat where you currently are.
- A few training runs. You could start thinking about how your runs will be on your running tour, and incorporate this into your usual running. Mix up your training and incorporate a variety of workouts, including long runs, speed work, and strength training, to build overall fitness.
- Simulate the Terrain. If possible, train on terrain similar to what you'll encounter on the tour. This will help your body adapt and reduce the risk of injury.
2. Gear and Packing
Having the right gear is essential for a comfortable and enjoyable running tour.
This will vary greatly depending on the tour. Here's a short packing checklist.
- Running Shoes: Bring a well-worn pair of running shoes that you're comfortable with. Consider packing an extra pair in case of unexpected issues.
- Running Gear: Pack moisture-wicking and weather-appropriate clothing, including tops, shorts, leggings, and jackets. Don't forget extra socks.
- Hydration and Nutrition: Bring a hydration pack or water bottle and energy gels or snacks to keep your energy levels up during runs.
- Recovery Tools: Pack items like foam rollers, massage balls, and compression gear to aid in recovery after your runs.
- Essentials: Include items like sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, and a small first aid kit.
Each of our tours includes a packing checklist!
They are specific to each tour and look something like this...
3. Mental Preparation
A running tour is as much a mental effort as it is a physical one.
Here are some tips to prepare mentally.
- Set realistic goals by understanding your limits - it’s okay to walk or take breaks if needed.
- Keep a positive mindset and be open to new experiences. Running in a new environment can be challenging but also incredibly rewarding!
- Enjoy it! Remember that running tours are about exploration and enjoyment. Take in the sights, sounds, and culture of your trip...
4. Nutrition and Hydration
Proper nutrition and hydration are key to maintaining energy levels and performance during your trip. If you have a sensitive stomach or prefer home comforts, it’s a good idea to bring some snacks from home or things you know your stomach is good with. Especially if your running tour involves longer runs such as marathons!
- Eat a balanced meal a few hours before your run, focusing on carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats.
- Stay hydrated by drinking water regularly throughout the day. Consider electrolyte drinks to replenish lost minerals.
- Refuel with a combination of protein and carbohydrates within an hour of finishing your run to aid recovery.
5. Logistics and Planning
Ensure all logistics are in place for a smooth and stress-free experience.
We take care of everything for your running tour there. But make sure you have everything you need in place to get there in the first place..!
And for any emergency situation.
- Make sure you have all necessary travel documents, including your passport, visa (if required), and travel insurance.
- Familiarise yourself with the tour itinerary, including daily run distances, start times, and meeting points.
- Have emergency contact information handy.
