Introduction
If you’re looking for a trail running holiday that feels like a real adventure, it’s hard to beat Chamonix. Set beneath Mont Blanc, this iconic alpine town is often called the home of trail running. It’s where the world’s best runners come for UTMB, but this isn’t about racing. This is about slowing things down, running for the views, and sharing the experience with like-minded people.
Our Chamonix running holiday is built around that idea. Over 5 days, you’ll move from valley trails to high alpine ridgelines, spend nights in traditional mountain refuges, and finish with a touch of well-earned spa luxury back in town.

Contents:
Day 1: Arrival, Shakeout Run & Settling Into Chamonix
Your running weekend in Chamonix begins in the afternoon, with arrivals from 14:00 at our hotel and spa in the valley. Straight away, you’ll feel it . . . that buzz of being somewhere special. Chamonix isn’t just another destination for running holidays in Europe, it’s the destination.
After check-in, we head out for a relaxed 6km shakeout run.
This is all about:
Loosening the legs after travel
Getting your first taste of alpine trails
Easing into the weekend with no pressure
Think forest paths, gentle elevation (it’s Chamonix . . . “flat” is relative), and plenty of chat along the way.
Back at the hotel, there’s time to enjoy the spa before heading into town for your first taste of Savoie cuisine. This is where the group really starts to bond. Our running retreats are as much about people as they are about the miles.
Day 2: Into the Mountains – Chamonix to Glacier du Tour
10km + 1600m elevation
This is where your trail running holiday in the Alps really begins. We leave the comfort of the valley behind (after one very important stop at a bakery for fresh baguettes) and start heading up towards the mountains.
The route builds gradually:
Valley trails and pine forests
Smooth, runnable single track
Then up above the tree line into open alpine terrain
As you climb higher, the views open up: glaciers, peaks, and that unmistakable Mont Blanc backdrop.
The final stretch takes you onto glacial moraine, arriving at a mountain refuge beside the Glacier du Tour. This is your home for the night.
Expect:
A truly unique mountain hut, perched at the foot of the Glacier du Tour
A warm, simple bed in dorm rooms
Hearty alpine food
A lively hut atmosphere
And, if you’re lucky, a sky full of stars
This is what trail running vacations should feel like: simple, wild, and completely immersive.
Day 3: Balcony Trails to the Swiss Border
15km + 830m elevation
After yesterday’s big climb, today is all about flow. We traverse across the mountainside on some of the most enjoyable trails in the valley, the kind that make you understand why this is the Mecca of trail running in Europe.
Highlights include:
Rolling balcony trails with huge views
Crossing towards the Swiss border
A well-earned coffee stop mid-run
Long, cruisy descents into the valley
But we’re not done yet! We climb once more to reach our second refuge, sitting high at around 2,200m. From here, you’ll look back across the Mont Blanc massif, a completely different perspective from the day before.
Another evening in the mountains, another shared dinner, and that growing sense of connection.

Day 4: Grand Balcon Sud, Lac Blanc & Return to Chamonix
23km + 1100m elevation
This is the big one and for many, the highlight of the entire trip. We start by descending back into the valley, picking up supplies for lunch, and then heading out again along the famous Grand Balcon Sud.
With Mont Blanc constantly in view, you’ll:
Run flowing trails high above the valley
Pass iconic viewpoints
Reach the stunning Lac Blanc, known for its mirror-like reflections of the peaks
After the obligatory photos, it’s time to head back down.
You’ve got options:
Take the lift to ease the descent
Or run all the way back, including a section of the UTMB course
Either way, finishing back in Chamonix feels special.
And then, the reward:
Spa time
Good food
A final night celebrating the adventure
This is where your running retreat meets a little well-earned luxury.
Day 5: Final Run & Departure
10km + 500m elevation
Your last morning begins with an optional pre-breakfast run along the Petit Balcon Sud.
It’s a quieter moment:
Calm trails
Morning light on the mountains
That feeling of wanting to stay just a little longer
We make our way back into town, finishing at the famous UTMB finish line for one final group photo.
The trip officially wraps at 10:00 but don’t be surprised if you’re already thinking about your next running adventure holiday before you’ve even left!
Why This Chamonix Running Holiday Is So Special
There are plenty of running holidays, but this one stands out because of the experience it creates.
You’re not just ticking off runs, you’re:
Moving through landscapes that constantly change
Staying high in the mountains, not just visiting them
Sharing the journey with a supportive group
Balancing adventure with comfort
It’s this mix that makes it one of the most unique trail running holidays Europe has to offer.
FAQs
Do I need to be an experienced trail runner?
No, you should be comfortable running for a few hours and handling hills but there is no pressure to run fast or keep going without stops. We keep things social and supportive, making this ideal for both newer trail runners and those used to longer running vacations.
What makes this different from other trail running holidays?
It’s the combination of world-class trails and a genuinely supportive environment.
Run Weekends brings together like-minded runners who are there to enjoy the journey, creating a relaxed, social experience exploring some of the most iconic alpine trails by day and sharing unforgettable nights in mountain refuges high in the Alps.
What do I carry?
Just a light pack with essentials for two nights. Your main luggage stays in Chamonix, so you can focus on running light and enjoying the trails.
Is this a good option for solo travellers?
Absolutely. Many people join solo, which is why these trips work so well as running holidays for singles. The group dynamic is a huge part of the experience.
How does this compare to UK trail running holidays?
UK trail running holidays are brilliant, but Chamonix offers:
Bigger mountains
Higher altitude trails
A more dramatic alpine environment
It’s a different level of adventure, and a must-do for anyone who loves trail running.
